Endourology, Laparoscopy and Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship
Since 2003, Carson Wong, MD and Daniel J. Culkin, MD, have directed a one year clinical fellowship,
endorsed by the Endourological Society,
in endourology, laparoscopy, and minimally invasive surgery. The goal of the fellowship is to allow a fully trained
urologist to acquire:
- advanced laparoscopic skills required for urologic oncology and reconstructive surgery
- robot-assisted laparoscopic skills
- advanced endourologic skills required for treatment of complex urinary calculus disease
- a working knowledge of the metabolic evaluation and prevention of stone disease
Responsibilities during the academic year will include the:
- didactic and surgical teaching of residents and medical students
- organization of endourology and uroradiology conferences
- availability for on call coverage
Clinical research with manuscript preparation is encouraged.
Based on current clinical volume, each fellow can expect to be involved in a minimum of:
- 50 SWLs
- 60 ureteroscopies
- 35 percutaneous nephrolithotomies
- 45 laparoscopic nephrectomies
- 6 laparoscopic pyeloplasties
- 80 robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomies
The fellow will be designated as a PGY6 or PGY7 in the Department of Urology, drawing a gross salary
plus fringe benefits commensurate of PGY year. Evening and weekend call will be scheduled on rotation with the
adult faculty of the Department of Urology. Facilities covered will include Presbyterian Hospital,
Baptist Medical Center, and Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
