Female Urology
Female incontinence is a common problem and a major source of aggravation for many women as
they process through life. Symptoms include urgency, leakage of urine with exercise or activity
and even bladder pain. The quality of life of a women afflicted with this problem is significant.
It can keep a young mother from playing with her children from the fear of that this most natural
activity will cause incontinence. It can result in an active, athletic woman withdrawing from her
tennis or golf groups and changing from an active to a sedentary life style in order to avoid
embarrassment.
At OU Medical Center, the Department of Urology has a Center of Excellence for the treatment of
Incontinence. Our center offers a comprehensive and state of the art diagnostic testing facility,
compassionate and carrying nursing and support staff and fellowship trained urologists who are
proficient in all forms of treatment available for incontinence.
Daniel J. Culkin, MD is the Director of this
Center of Excellence. He is experienced in behavioral
modifications and other non-operative interventions, including InterStim placements as well as
state-of-the-art medications available to treat this problem. Dr. Culkin has personally performed
over 500 female anti-incontinence surgical procedures with a 95% success rate. These procedures are
performed with an average operative time of 25 minutes and are done as an outpatient surgery. Of
interest, Dr. Culkin served as Chairman, Master Protocol Working Group, Interstitial Cystitis Clinic
Trials Group (ICCTG) Steering and Planning Committee, which is sponsored by the NIDDK at the NIH.
This group has made great strides in the treatment of interstitial cystitis as well as female
incontinence procedures.
