PGY1

The PGY1 year is spent in General Surgery. Many of the surgical subspecialties, such as cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and vascular surgery, are available from which the resident may select his/her rotations. The resident becomes familiar with and proficient at perioperative management of the surgical patient; aspects of wound healing, nutrition, and intensive care management. Basic surgical skills such as suturing techniques, knot tying, and handling of instrumentation are also mastered.
