In the PGY4/Urology-3 year, the resident rotates for four months through each of three private practice
settings. The OU Physicians Urology Group rotation presents strong
exposure to managed and capitated care procedures. The second
rotation involves a group of private urologists, the St. Anthony Urology
Group, whose patient demographics are concentrated primarily on indemnity
insured patients. The third rotation is based at the INTEGRIS
Baptist Medical Center Renal Transplantation Service. Resident
skills are expected to mature and an understanding of the economics of a
urology practice are acquired. Residents become familiar with
contractual work, develop an understanding of economic risk in capitated
care, and understand that efficiency in cost should never outweigh quality
and compassion in patient care. Urologic oncology cases (i.e.
radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy, radical nephrectomy, and
nephroureterectomy) are part of the patient load this year.
Techniques in urethral reconstructive surgery, female incontinence
surgery, and the correction of pelvic prolapse are mastered. The
indications and risks of these types of procedures are expected to be
thoroughly understood. In addition, the resident participates in
clinical research studies. An increase in surgical skills and fund
of knowledge commensurate with the level of training is
expected.
